A nuclear meltdown occurred at a Chernobyl power plant in the Soviet Union on 26 April 1986, resulting from an inadequate safety system. Massive fires in the power plant’s No. 4 unit caused the core to melt down; it subsequently exploded, sending a plume of radioactive debris over large parts of what at the time was still the Ukrainian SSR and parts of Belarus, Russia and Poland. The total combined explosive yield was attributed to one megaton of TNT equivalent (1×10**6 tons TNT) during this explosion, putting it second only to the Trinity test as the most powerful nuclear explosion ever detonated by humans.
After an explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, people living in a 30 km radius around the plant are suffering from acute radiation syndrome. Polio has been reported in Ukraine and Belarus. A large number of farm animals have died and the graphite removed from the reactor.
